NCERT Class 9 Social Science textbook still not ready as schools open
Four of five new NCERT Class 9 textbooks for 2026-27 are in print and on DIKSHA, but Social Science — renamed Gateway to Social Science — remains in final stages of development, leaving schools to begin the term without the official text.

NEW DELHI, May 29 — Four of five new NCERT Class 9 textbooks for the 2026-27 academic session are now in print and available on DIKSHA, but the Social Science volume — renamed Gateway to Social Science — remains in final stages of development, according to an official NCERT press release dated May 1, 2026.
The missing book matters because NCERT replaced the old four-volume Social Science setup — covering history, geography, political science, and economics — with a single integrated text of 16 thematic chapters. With the new academic year now underway across CBSE-affiliated schools, Class 9 Social Science sections are beginning the term without a final official textbook, raising questions about curriculum standardisation at a critical transition point.
The four available Class 9 titles — Ganita Manjari (Mathematics), Exploration (Science), Kaveri (English), and Sharda (Sanskrit) — were released in April 2026 and are free to download at ncert.nic.in and on the DIKSHA platform. NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani said around 4,000 experts — including subject specialists, classroom teachers, and academicians — contributed to the new Class 9 curriculum. CBSE Chairperson Rahul Singh separately stated that 'teaching should not stop during the transition period', signalling that the board expects schools to proceed with interim draft material or publisher-aligned editions. Private publishers moved faster: Goyal Brothers Prakashan released an aligned edition in February 2026, months before the official NCERT version was finalised.
The overhaul is the most significant restructuring of Class 9 Social Science in over two decades, mandated under NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. It is part of a rolling replacement that began with Foundational and Preparatory stage books and is now moving into the Secondary stage — NCERT has confirmed that changes for Classes 10 and 11 will follow in subsequent academic years. NCERT has not announced a specific release date for the Social Science volume. Draft chapters and the new thematic framework are accessible on ncert.nic.in; physical copies are expected once printing is complete. Schools can monitor the DIKSHA platform, where the four released Class 9 titles are already available as free PDFs.
