How to set up sibling discount rules in Inkwelly

For school accountants and principals offering a concession to families with two or more children on the rolls. By the end you will have sibling discount rules saved in Inkwelly — 2nd child, 3rd child, 4th child — that apply automatically the next time the fee profile is recalculated.

To set up sibling discount rules in Inkwelly: open Student Fee → Configuration → Sibling Discounts, click Add Sibling Rule, pick the sibling position (2nd, 3rd or 4th child), enter the discount percentage, write a short description, keep the rule Active, and save. Repeat for each position. The rules then apply automatically when the office recalculates a fee profile for any family with two or more children at the school.

Sibling discounts are one of the most common concessions Indian schools offer. CBSE, ICSE and most state-board schools quietly extend a 5 to 25 percent discount to a family's second child, and a larger discount to the third, to retain enrolment when parents could otherwise split children between two schools. A 1,200-student CBSE school in a Tier-2 city typically has 200 to 300 multi-child families on its rolls (roughly 18 to 25 percent of the student count), which means a sibling rule can affect 400 to 600 invoices every quarter. Inkwelly stores these as rules — not per-student adjustments — so the rule is applied to every eligible family automatically and the audit trail stays clean.

स्टेप 1

1. Open Sibling Discounts in Configuration

Open Inkwelly → Student Fee from the left sidebar, then click Configuration under SETUP. The Fee Configuration page shows four sections: Fee Structure, Discounts, Penalties & Refunds and Preferences. Under Discounts, click the Sibling Discounts tile (subtitle: "Configure fee discounts for siblings enrolled together").

2. Click Add Sibling Rule

The Sibling Discounts page shows every rule already saved for the session, with the sibling position, discount percentage, description and status. Click the Add Sibling Rule button on the top right. If no rules exist yet, the empty state shows the same button at the centre of the page.

3. Pick the sibling position

The Add Sibling Rule dialog opens. Pick a sibling position chip — 2nd Child, 3rd Child, 4th Child or 5th Child — or type a position from 2 to 10 in the field below. The 1st child does not get a sibling discount; the rule always starts from the 2nd child. Inkwelly uses the family link in the admissions record to figure out birth order, so the office does not need to re-enter it per student.

4. Enter the discount percentage and description

Type the discount percentage in the Discount percentage field. Common Indian school pattern: 10% for the 2nd child, 20% for the 3rd, 25% or higher for the 4th and beyond. Some schools waive 100% of tuition for the 4th child as a community-service gesture — Inkwelly accepts any value from 0 to 100. Add a short Description (for example, "10% off for the second child's tuition fee") so the office can recognise the rule on the list page later.

5. Keep the rule Active and save

Leave the Active toggle on. Active rules apply automatically the next time a fee profile is recalculated; inactive rules stay saved but are skipped — useful for end-of-session policy changes. Click Create Rule. Inkwelly saves the rule and returns you to the Sibling Discounts list, where the new row appears with a green Active pill.

6. Repeat for every sibling position your policy covers

Click Add Sibling Rule again and create one row per position your school's concession policy covers. A typical Indian school sets three rules — 2nd Child 10%, 3rd Child 20%, 4th Child 25%. Inkwelly enforces one rule per position, so the office cannot accidentally create two rules for the 2nd child. The list page sorts rules by position so the order on screen mirrors the birth order.

7. Confirm the discount on a multi-child family's fee profile

Open Student Fee → Fee Profiles, search for a family that has two or more children at the school, and open the second child's profile. The Discounts tab shows the sibling rule applied to that student, with the percentage and the rupee amount it reduces from the structure. If the discount does not appear yet, click the Recalculate icon next to the Edit button on the profile header — Inkwelly recomputes the breakdown and the sibling concession lands on the Outstanding line.

Next step — pair sibling discounts with the rest of the discount engine. Set up a How to set up staff-ward discount rules in Inkwelly rule for teachers' children, and a How to set up early-payment discount rules in Inkwelly rule for families that clear the annual fees upfront. For one-off concessions outside the rule engine — such as a hardship case — use the per-student flow in How to apply a discount to a student's fees in Inkwelly instead.

6 सवाल
How much sibling discount do Indian schools usually offer?

The common pattern across CBSE, ICSE and state-board schools is 10% for the second child, 15 to 20% for the third, and 25% or more for the fourth. Budget schools in Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns often go higher — sometimes a full tuition waiver for the fourth child — because retaining a multi-child family is cheaper than admitting four new students. Inkwelly accepts any percentage from 0 to 100 per position.

Can the sibling discount be limited to only Tuition fees in Inkwelly?

Today the rule applies the discount percentage to the structure-level fees. Most schools want the concession on Tuition only, so the description field is where the office records that policy — for example "10% off the second child's Tuition". For granular per-fee-head limits, the office can pair the rule with a fee-head exclusion or use the per-student discount flow for that family.

What if a family has children in different sessions or sister schools in Inkwelly?

Inkwelly counts only the children active in the current school and session for sibling-position math. A child who has moved to a different school under the same trust or has been issued a TC for an earlier session is not counted in the birth-order calculation, so the rule will not double-discount a family that has only one child currently enrolled here.

Sibling discount kaise lagaye Inkwelly me?

Student Fee menu kholiye, Configuration par jaiye, Discounts ke neeche Sibling Discounts tile par click kijiye. Add Sibling Rule button dabaiye, sibling position select kijiye (2nd, 3rd ya 4th Child), discount percentage bhariye (jaise 10), chhota description likhiye, Active toggle on rakhiye aur Create Rule par click kijiye. Har position ke liye ek rule banaiye. Multi-child family ki fee profile par discount apne aap apply ho jayega.

Doosre child ka kitna fee kam hota hai aur kab apply hoga?

Yeh aapke school ki policy par depend karta hai. Sabse common pattern: 2nd child ko 10% Tuition par discount, 3rd ko 20%, 4th ko 25%. Rule save karne ke baad jab bhi office us family ki fee profile Recalculate kare, ya jab agla invoice generate ho, discount apne aap line item ke roop me lag jata hai aur Outstanding utna kam ho jata hai.

Can I pause a sibling discount rule without deleting it in Inkwelly?

Yes. Open the rule on the Sibling Discounts list, click the pencil icon to edit, and turn the Active toggle off. The rule stays saved with its full history but Inkwelly skips it on the next recalculation, so new invoices do not get the concession. Turn the toggle back on whenever the policy resumes, without re-entering any data.
