Chhattisgarh shuts every school for 8 weeks as heatwave bites

Chhattisgarh's School Education Department preponed summer vacation by two weeks. Every government, aided, unaided and private school is shut April 20 to June 15 — eight weeks for principals and parents to plan around.

In a Raipur staff room on April 19, principals were still finalising the May 1 closure list when WhatsApp groups lit up: schools were shutting twelve days earlier, and the new return date was June 16 — not June 1. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai's order, issued from Mantralaya at Nava Raipur, gave Chhattisgarh's tens of thousands of schools less than 36 hours to send children home. For parents in Bilaspur, Durg and Korba, a six-week summer just became eight.

What the order actually says

The School Education Department's circular dated April 18, 2026 revises the original summer vacation window of May 1 to June 15 — the new vacation runs April 20 to June 15. The order applies to government, aided, unaided and private schools in every district, regardless of board (CGBSE, CBSE, ICSE, NIOS). Teachers, however, remain on duty for result work, RTE admissions, fee committee filings and pending evaluations. Schools that had already published a 2026-27 academic calendar must republish, because the eight-week break shifts every June activity — sports tryouts, induction days, library reopening — that was riding on a May 12 reopen.

What this means for your school

If your new session starts June 16, treat it as a working assumption — not a fact. The state's heatwave advisory window runs to end-May; if temperatures stay above 45°C in north Chhattisgarh, the department has reserved the right to extend. Reopening discipline matters. Attendance rosters, fee instalment dates and academic-session boundaries all need to be reconfirmed in the first 48 hours after schools resume — otherwise the carry-over of last year's fee dues and class lists turns into a five-week recovery job.

What to watch next

This is the third state heatwave order in three weeks — Odisha, Bihar and now Chhattisgarh. As we covered in state-by-state timing changes across India, monsoon onset will decide whether the June 16 reopen holds. Watch for the second-week-of-June notice from Mantralaya.

Frequently asked

3 questions
When will schools in Chhattisgarh reopen?

The order fixes June 16, 2026 as the reopening date for all government, aided and private schools in Chhattisgarh — but the state has flagged it could extend if heatwave conditions persist into early June. Principals should plan for both scenarios, including a fee-instalment buffer.

Does the early summer vacation apply to teachers too?

No. The circular keeps teachers on duty through the summer break for result-related work, RTE admissions, fee-committee filings and evaluation backlog. Only students and academic activity are paused — administrative work continues at the school office.

Does this apply to CBSE and ICSE schools, or only state-board schools?

It applies to every school in Chhattisgarh regardless of affiliating board — CBSE, ICSE, NIOS and CGBSE schools all fall under the State Education Department's heatwave order. Boarding schools follow a separate residential safety protocol cleared by the district collector.
